INEC deploys 18,511 Official, Police deploys 25,000 Officers Deployed As #EdoDecides

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), has announced that a total of 1,925,105 voters will vote during Saturday governorship election in Edo state – the gubernatorial poll, which would be supervised by over 18,511 officials of the Commission.

Speaking on Wednesday to political parties civil society organisations, nongovernmental organisations, interest groups and other stakeholders in meeting Benin City, capital of Edo state, the Chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, assured that the officials had been well trained on issues pertaining to election and electoral guidelines.

Yakubu, who disclosed that accreditation and voting will commence simultaneously, stressed that no voter would be allowed to the polling units with security escort.

According to him, highly placed personalities are not eligible to come with thugs and security men to polling units to vote, just as he said that after voting, voters should leave.

“Heads of the security agencies from our various inter-governmental agencies meetings have given their assurances that they will provide adequate security for the electorate, INEC and ad hoc staff and materials. “No orderly may accompany these high profile personalities to the polling centres, but where they escort them, they are not expected to display their arms,’’ he stated.

In his contribution, acting Inspector General of Police, Ibrahim Idris, assured the people of the state of adequate security, saying that the police had earlier deployed 25,000 personnel to complement those in Edo command.

Apple Unveils iPhone 7 Alongside 7 Plus With Dual-Lens Camera

Apple today announced the 4.7-inch iPhone 7 and 5.5-inch iPhone 7 Plus at its "See You on the 7th" media event in San Francisco.

The new iPhones feature a 64-bit four-core A10 Fusion processor, stereo speakers positioned on opposite ends of the device, a flush Force-sensitive home button with a Taptic Engine for haptic feedback, and IP67-standard water and dust resistance – but no headphone jack. Wired Lightning in-ear EarPod headphones and a Lightning to 3.5mm adapter are included in the box. Apple is offering Siri-enabled wireless earbuds called AirPods as a separate accessory, available for $159 in late October.

The iPhone 7 features a faster, more energy efficient 12-megapixel rear-facing camera with optical image stabilization, six-element f/1.8 aperture lens, an artificial light compensating flicker sensor, Quad-LED True Tone flash, and enhanced tone mapping. The device also has a 7-megapixel front-facing FaceTime HD camera with wide color capture and auto-image stabilization.

The iPhone 7 Plus differentiates itself from the 4.7-inch handset with a dual-lens 12-megapixel camera featuring all the same features, but is much more advanced, including a wide-angle lens and a separate telephoto lens that combine to create 2x optical zoom and 10x digital zoom features. The ISP dual-lens camera is also capable of producing live shallow depth of field shots and "bokeh" effects in preview mode.

The smartphones are crafted from anodized aluminum and have a stainless steel Apple logo, and come in a new glossy jet black color, as well as simple "black" (with a black Apple logo), alongside silver, gold and rose gold. The antenna bands are aligned along the edges of the handsets, instead of across the rear like on the previous models, and the volume buttons are positioned directly on the side of the handset (as opposed to inside a recess as per the iPhone 6s and 6s Plus).

Both devices also benefit from a 25% brighter "cinema standard" Retina HD display with wider color gamut, improved color management, and 3D Touch. Audio has also been improved with the new speakers, which include increased volume and better dynamic range.

The A10 Fusion four-core processor powering the two devices delivers up to 40% faster CPU performance, up to 50% faster graphics performance, and better efficiency compared to the A9 chip inside the iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus. Both the new smartphones come with improved battery life, faster wireless, and the improved water resistance means the iPhones stand up to splashing and even short periods of immersion in water.

Pre-orders begin Friday September 9 and the devices are available to buy in more than 25 countries from September 16. iPhone 7 starts at $649 and comes in 32GB/128GB/256GB capacities. The iPhone 7 Plus starts at $769, also in 32GB/128GB/256GB capacities. All come pre-installed with iOS 10, which is also available for download on September 13.

iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus are also available through the iPhone Upgrade Program, starting at $27/month and $32/month in the United States respectively. Apple said the iPhone Upgrade Program will be expanding to the United Kingdom and China.

Eid-el-Kabir: FG declares Monday, Tuesday public holidays

The Minister of Interior, Retired Lt.-Gen. Abdulrahman Dambazau, made the declaration on behalf of the Federal Government in a statement signed by the acting Permanent Secretary in the ministry, Muhammadu Maccido.

He enjoined all Muslims and Nigerians in general to support and join hands with President Muhammadu Buhari in his sustained efforts to diversify the economy and progressively accelerate the pace of economic recovery.

The minister said that government was aware of the current economic challenges the nation was facing. He assured that that appropriate steps were being taken to address the challenges.

The minister said that the Federal Government was working to‎ revitalise the agriculture sector and the “Youth Empowerment Scheme” in Information and Communication Technology (ICT).

He said that other areas of priority to government included the “The “Change Begins with Me”, a value re-orientation programme, and other social intervention programmes as well as massive capital releases. The minister expressed optimism that the current economic difficulties would soon be over, urging all to continue to support the government toward building a new formidable Nigeria.

He wished all Nigerians a happy Eid-el-Kabir celebration.

Apple prepares to show off new iPhones and other products

Apple on Wednesday as the company prepares to unveil expected new iPhones and other products at an event in San Francisco starting at 1 p.m. EDT.

Analysts say the new iPhones could help Apple recover modestly from a recent dip in sales. But with few expected dramatic changes from previous models, Apple watchers aren't expecting the kind of big spikes in consumer demand that the company saw two years ago, when it introduced larger screens.

Apple sold nearly 92 million iPhones during the first six months of this year, about 15 percent fewer than the same period last year. This year marks the first time that Apple has seen such declines. Industry analysts say it's because last fall's iPhone 6S and 6S Plus didn't contain many new features or improvements.

Investors are hoping for a bigger boost in sales next year. Wall Street analysts say reports from Apple's Asian manufacturers and suppliers indicate the company has decided to wait a year before introducing a major overhaul of the phone in 2017. That will be the iPhone's 10th anniversary.

Trump promises huge boost in military spending

Republican Donald Trump vowed to boost military spending by tens of billions of dollars on Wednesday, outlining plans for major increases in the number of active troops, Navy ships and submarines, and fighter planes as he works to convince skeptics in both parties that he's ready to lead the world's most powerful military.

The New York businessman, who has struggled at times to demonstrate a command of foreign policy, also seemed to acknowledge he does not currently have a plan to address cyber security or the Islamic State group.

If elected, Trump said he would give military leaders 30 days to formulate a plan to defeat the group, commonly known as ISIS. And he would ask the joint chiefs of staff to conduct a review of the nation's cyber defenses to determine all vulnerabilities.

Trump's address came hours before his national security acumen is tested at a "commander in chief" forum on NBC.

"We want to deter, avoid and prevent conflict through our unquestioned military strength," Trump declared of his Democratic opponent in his Wednesday speech, delivered inside the exclusive Union League of Philadelphia, which first allowed women in 1986.

The appearances mark an intense, two-day focus on national security by Trump, who has offered tough rhetoric on America's challenges abroad but few details.

The United States currently spends more than $600 billion a year on the military, more than the next seven countries combined.

Trump's rival, Democrat Hillary Clinton, has tried to paint the billionaire businessman as erratic, making the case that his disposition would be a major liability on the world stage.

"They know they can count on me to be the kind of commander in chief who will protect our country and our troops, and they know they cannot count on Donald Trump," Clinton said Tuesday. "They view him as a danger and a risk."

Trump's team has worked aggressively in recent days to turn deflect such criticism back at Clinton.

"She's trigger-happy and very unstable," Trump said of his Democratic opponent, calling her use of a private email server while secretary of state "reckless."

While Clinton and Trump will be featured at the Wednesday night forum, they will appear at separate times and will not face each other on stage. The forum could serve as a warm-up to their highly anticipated first presidential debate, scheduled for Sept. 26 in New York.

Trump will deliver another speech Wednesday evening, at the convention of New York's Conservative Party.

Trump's Union League address also included his plans to eliminate deep spending cuts, known as the "sequester," enacted when Congress failed to reach a budget compromise in 2011. Republicans and Democrats voted for the automatic, across-the board cuts that affected both military and domestic programs.

Trump has given mixed signals about whether he wants to increase military spending overall.

While Trump has often complained that U.S. forces are not large enough or well-equipped, he's also said that he'd save money by cutting waste and ensuring that contractors aren't getting sweetheart deals because of their connections or lobbying efforts.

His position on the sequester has been even more murky. Trump expressed support for the cuts in interviews in 2013 — even describing them as too small — but seemed to suggest at the time that military spending should be exempt, undermining the sequester premise.

A senior adviser, speaking on the condition of anonymity to share details ahead of the speech, said Trump would ensure the additional spending is fully paid for. The adviser did not explain how, but suggested there would be no need for structural budget cuts to pay for the billions of additional military spending over 10 years.

Even before promising a huge boost in military spending, Trump's plans to cut taxes, expand infrastructure spending and leave untouched entitlement programs such as Social Security already threatened to add trillions of dollars to the federal deficit.

Trying to emphasize his military support, Trump's campaign released a letter on Tuesday from 88 retired generals and admirals citing an urgent need for a "course correction" in America's national security policy. It was aimed at rebutting Clinton's arguments that she would be best positioned to lead the military and reassuring Republicans who have openly worried that his provocative statements might undermine U.S. alliances.

But questions remain, even in his party.

Bob Corker, the Republican chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, repeatedly refused to say directly whether he had confidence in Trump as commander in chief when questioned on MSNBC's "Morning Joe" on Wednesday.

"I do believe that Donald Trump is growing in his understanding of these issues and I think that he's beginning to get more and more people around him that have a depth of understanding as to the complexities and I'm watching this evolve," he said. He added that, "we'll all make our assessments," in the candidates' foreign affairs abilities by early November.

Clinton, Trump: He's a national security danger; no she is

Hillary Clinton accused Donald Trump of insulting America's veterans and pressing dangerous military plans around the globe on Tuesday, seeking to undercut his appeal to service families in Southern voting battlegrounds. Trump declared "our country is going to hell" because of policies she would make even worse.

Clinton, addressing supporters in Florida, warned that Trump would lead the nation back to war in the Middle East. And to military vets and their families, she pointed anew to his summertime dust-up with the Muslim parents of a slain American soldier.

"His whole campaign has been one long insult to all those who have worn the uniform," the Democratic nominee said at the University of South Florida in Tampa.

Republican Trump, trying emphasize his military support, released a letter from 88 retired generals and admirals citing an urgent need for a "course correction" in America's national security policy. It was aimed at rebutting Clinton's arguments that she would be best positioned to lead the military and reassuring Republicans who have openly worried that his provocative statements might undermine U.S. alliances.

"We believe that such a change can only be made by someone who has not been deeply involved with, and substantially responsible for, the hollowing out of our military and the burgeoning threats facing our country around the world," the military leaders wrote. "For this reason, we support Donald Trump's candidacy to be our next commander in chief."

Clinton pushed back, saying Trump has lagged in securing key military supporters compared to past Republican nominees including John McCain and Mitt Romney. She pointed to her endorsements from retired Marine Gen. John Allen, who blasted Trump at the Democratic National Committee, and former CIA deputy director Mike Morell.

"They know they can count on me to be the kind of commander in chief who will protect our country and our troops, and they know they cannot count on Donald Trump," Clinton said en route to Florida. "They view him as a danger and a risk."

The conflicting messages came as the candidates prepared to appear at an MSNBC forum Wednesday night on national security. While they will appear separately and not be on stage at the same time, it could serve as a warm-up to their highly-anticipated first presidential debate on Sep. 26 in New York.

Campaigning in Virginia Beach, Virginia, Trump vowed to take aggressive action to help veterans at home and confront threats abroad including acts of terrorism from the Islamic State group. He was questioned by retired Gen. Michael Flynn, the former director of the Defense Intelligence Agency who is a strong supporter.

"We are going to solve the ISIS problem," Trump said. "But we have to get back to building our country, because our country is going to hell."

Trump promised to fix problems at the Veterans Administration, which has grappled with patient care mismanagement during the Obama administration. Until those problems are resolved, he said he would allow veterans to seek treatment at private doctors or hospitals free of charge.

"Your government is going to pay your bill," he pledged.

Clinton's message was amplified by her running mate, Virginia Sen. Tim Kaine, who promoted his own foreign policy credentials in a speech in Wilmington, North Carolina.

Kaine said Trump is misleading voters on his foreign policy views, asserting he was against invading Iraq despite statements to several news outlets at the time indicating otherwise.

Kaine, who noted his own son's service in the Marine Corps, is a member of both the Senate Armed Services and Foreign Relations committees.

Meanwhile, Clinton's campaign released a new television ad entitled, "Sacrifice," that shows military veterans watching some of the New York businessman's more provocative statements.

The spot includes clips of Trump claiming to know more about the Islamic State group than military generals, and his criticism of McCain, the Republican senator from Arizona and a former prisoner of war. The ad, which features former Georgia Sen. Max Cleland, a triple-amputee who served in Vietnam, also keys on Trump's assertion that he has sacrificed a lot compared to families who have lost loved ones in conflict.

"Our veterans deserve better," reads a line at the end of the ad, which is airing in Ohio, Florida, Iowa, Nevada and Pennsylvania.

Republicans, too, have questioned Trump's capacity to serve as commander in chief. Dozens of GOP national security leaders released a letter last month warning that he would risk the nation's "national security and well-being."

Separately, Trump continued to face questions about his immigration policy a day after refusing to rule out a pathway to legal status for immigrants in the country illegally. He focused on his proposed border wall plan in a Tuesday interview with ABC's "Good Morning America."

Last week in Phoenix, he told a raucous crowd of supporters that there was "one way only" for immigrants here illegally to become legal — to return home and get in line for official readmittance.

Families seek relatives missing in Gabon’s post-electoral crisis

With hundreds detained and a disputed number of people killed in Gabon’s violent post-electoral crisis, several families in the Central African nation are on a desperate hunt for information on their missing loved ones.

On Wednesday evening, shortly after the final results of Gabon’s fraught presidential elections were released, Bruna had a brief phone conversation with her sister, Carena, that left her feeling very alarmed.

Carena was at the campaign headquarters of Jean Ping – the opposition candidate who has rejected the official election results – in the Gabonese capital of Libreville. Like many Ping supporters that fateful evening, Carena and her mother, Henriette, had gathered outside their candidate’s campaign office to hear the much-anticipated poll results.

Trouble was expected in the lead-up to the August 27 poll and trouble subsequently broke out days later when the Gabonese interior minister finally announced that President Ali Bongo had been reelected, beating Ping by a wafer-thin margin of less than 6,000 votes.

Bruna – a 25-year-old resident of the central French city of Clermont-Ferrand who asked that the family name not be disclosed due to security reasons – had been closely monitoring the events back home. When she got through to Carena in Libreville on Wednesday, she found her sister “panicking”, Bruna recalled in a phone interview with FRANCE 24. “She [Carena] told me, ‘They are firing at us, Ali [Bongo] is killing us.'”

Bruna hasn’t spoken to her mother and sister since, and nearly a week later, the family is concerned about their well-being.

Wednesday, August 31, was a dark night in Gabon’s history. Shortly after Ping declared himself the rightful winner of the 2016 presidential poll, his supporters took to the streets of Libreville, setting fire to the parliament building amid chants of “Ping hey-ho, Ali must go”.

Gabonese security forces proceeded to launch a brutal crackdown on Ping’s campaign headquarters, according to opposition supporters. Days later, photographs of the building circulating on social media sites showed an exterior pockmarked by bullet holes, while office floors inside the building were smeared with blood.

Government officials say at least three people were killed in the post-electoral violence. But in an interview with FRANCE 24 Tuesday, Ping put the death toll at “between 50 to 100”. More than 800 people have been arrested in the post-electoral crackdown, leaving many families scrambling to trace their loved ones.

iPhone 7: All the latest news and rumours about Apple's new iPhone

Apple is expected to reveal the iPhone 7 in September 2016 and there's already a huge amount of hype surrounding the next-generation smartphone.

Wednesday is a big day in the tech world. Apple is holding its annual launch event where the new iPhone 7 is expected to be revealed.

The much-heralded device comes just as rival Samsung has recalled its flagship Note 7 over battery issues.

The tech rumour mill has been running at fever pitch about possible new iPhone features and gadgetry.

Many commentators expect Apple to have ditched the headphone jack, leaving only one port.

That would force consumers to use Bluetooth headphones or buy those compatible with Apple's Lightning port that is also used for charging.

However, old gear won't be completely obsolete, as Apple is expected to include an adapter jack.

Ebonyi one-man, one-hectare agric programme begins as youths get cheques

The Minister of Agriculture and Rural
Development, Chief Audu Ogbeh, on Monday flagged off Governor David Umahi administration’s one-man, one hectare agricultural programme in the state.

The occasion which was witnessed by the Minister of Health, Prof. Isaac Adewole, was kick-started with the planting of palm trees at Ezillo Farm and a symbolic tree of peace at Ishielu Local Government Area headquarters. The symbolic tree was to commemorate a peace agreement between Ezillo and Ezza-Ezillo.

Speaking at the Abakaliki Township Stadium where thousands of women and youths had gathered to witness the grand finale of the events, Ogbeh
pledged Federal Government’s support to Ebonyi State in its agricultural programme.

He said: “We are going to bring machinery here. We hope that before we round up,there will be a major industrial starch plant in this state.

We also believe that we will let you have some cassava flour processing plants, especially for cassava, fufu.

We shall bring you another crop, cashew nut, because the demand for cashew nut in the international market is high. You are famous for rice production, but you are going to be more famous when we bring our programme for implementation.

“Today, I assure you that we shall join hands with you to make your rice production plan work. We shall make sure you get the best seed, especially, the F.44. It is about the national standard we have because in Nigeria today, there are over 70 varieties of rice. We cannot grow all.”

The minister, who also promised to bring rice harvesters and threshers to Ebonyi State, commended Governor Umahi for the robust agricultural programme, especially the one-man,
one-hectare policy.

Challenging politicians and civil servants to have a second address in agriculture, he said that poverty in the country was not acceptable.

He explained that there was hunger in the country today because Nigerians had been lazy in the past by focussing on oil and importation of everything, including toothpicks.

“What your governor is doing is going to be strongly supported by us. We shall support you with good seeds. And before the year runs out, before the rice harvest,we shall bring in small machines to help you harvest your rice.

And for those of you civil servants, politicians and so on going to agriculture, please, take it a business seriously,” a statement by Umahi’s Chief Press Secretary Emma Anya quoted the minister as saying.

Ogbeh, who in company with Umahi, later gave out a symbolic cheque to one of the beneficiaries of the state’s youth and women empowerment programme, told the youth that the governor, had by his actions “handed over the key to prosperity” to them.

Umahi had in his opening remarks explained that the agricultural programme was aimed at ensuring food security for the state and the country. He said his administration had among others, procured 40
tractors, distributed farm seedlings and gotten soft loans for genuine farmers in the state.

Philippine president regrets 'son of a bitch' remark

With Labor Day behind them, Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton are pushing ahead in top presidential battlegrounds in the South.

Trump, the Republican nominee, is set to campaign in Virginia and North Carolina on Tuesday, two critical states in his path to the presidency. Clinton, the Democrat, is campaigning in Florida in search of an advantage in the nation's largest swing state. A Clinton victory in Florida would make it virtually impossible for Trump to overcome her advantage in the race for 270 electoral votes.

The day before in swing state Ohio, Trump softened his stance on immigration while Clinton blasted Russia for suspected tampering in the U.S. electoral process.

In a rare news conference aboard her new campaign plane, Clinton said she is concerned about "credible reports about Russian government interference in our elections."

"We are going to have to take those threats and attacks seriously," Clinton told reporters traveling with her from Ohio to Illinois.

Clinton's comments follow reports that the Russian government may have been involved in the hacking of Democratic National Committee emails just days before the party's national convention. The emails, later revealed by WikiLeaks, showed some DNC officials favoring Clinton over her primary opponent, Bernie Sanders — who has since endorsed Clinton for president.

She said Russian President Vladimir Putin appears "quite satisfied with himself" and said Trump "has generally parroted what is a Putin-Kremlin line."

Meanwhile, Trump extended a rare invitation to journalists to accompany him on his private plane from Cleveland to Youngstown, Ohio. The billionaire businessman appeared to shy away from his hard-line vow to block "amnesty" for immigrants in the country illegally.

Any immigrants who want full citizenship must return to their countries of origin and get in line, he told reporters — but he would not rule out a pathway to legal status for the millions living in the U.S. illegally, as he did in a long-awaited policy speech last week.

"We're going to make that decision into the future," Trump said.

Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte expressed regret Tuesday over his "son of a bitch" remark while referring to President Barack Obama, in a rare display of contrition by a politician whose wide arc of profanities has unabashedly targeted world figures including the pope and the U.N. chief.

In a statement read out by his spokesman, Duterte said that while his "strong comments" in response to questions by a reporter "elicited concern and distress, we also regret it came across as a personal attack on the U.S. president."

Duterte had made the intemperate remarks Monday before flying to Laos, where he is attending a regional summit. He had been scheduled to meet Obama separately in Laos, but Obama indicated he had second thoughts, and the White House announced that the meeting had been canceled.

The Philippines did not comment publicly on the cancellation until about nine hours later, when Duterte's statement said that both sides had "mutually agreed to postpone" the meeting.

Even though Duterte's latest comment does not amount to an apology, the expression of regret is unusual for the tough-talking former mayor, who is unapologetic about his manner of speech and liberally peppers casual statements with profanities such as "son of a bitch" and "son of a whore."

But perhaps Duterte's aides realized it would be unwise to take on the most powerful official in the world, and that there would be a price to pay for insulting the president of the United States.

The U.S. is one of the Philippines' largest trading partners and a key security ally in its fight against terrorism in the country's south. Manila also needs Washington's help in dealing with a more assertive China in the disputed South China Sea. The U.S. also provides hundreds of millions of dollars in annual financial assistance to the Philippine military.

Duterte likely had realized his folly by the time he arrived in the Laotian capital of Vientiane on Monday night.

Speaking to reporters here, he said, "I do not want to quarrel with the most powerful country on the planet," but immediately took his typical combative approach by saying: "Washington has been so liberal about criticizing human rights, human rights and human rights. How about you? I have so many questions also about human rights to ask you. So ... people who live in glass houses should not" throw stones at others.

He said if the White House had problems with him, it could have sent him a diplomatic note and let him respond. "There's a protocol for that," Duterte said. "You just cannot shoot a statement against the president of any country."

But by Tuesday, he had done a complete U-turn in the tone of his statement.

"We look forward to ironing out differences arising out of national priorities and perceptions, and working in mutually responsible ways for both countries," the statement said.

The flap over Duterte's remarks started when a reporter asked him how he intends to explain the extrajudicial killings of drug dealers to Obama. More than 2,000 suspected drug dealers and users have been killed since Duterte launched a war on drugs after taking office on June 30.

In his typical foul-mouthed style, Duterte responded: "I am a president of a sovereign state and we have long ceased to be a colony. I do not have any master except the Filipino people, nobody but nobody. You must be respectful. Do not just throw questions. Putang ina, I will swear at you in that forum," he said, using the Tagalog phrase for "son of a bitch."

Duterte has previously cursed Pope Francis and U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon.

"Who is he (Obama) to confront me?" Duterte said, adding that the Philippines had not received an apology from the United States for misdeeds committed during its colonization of the country.

He pointed to the killing of Muslim Moros more than a century ago during a U.S. pacification campaign in the southern Philippines, blaming the wounds of the past as "the reason why (the south) continues to boil" with separatist insurgencies.

Last week, Duterte said he was ready to defend his bloody crackdown on illegal drugs, which has sparked concern from the U.S. and other countries.

Duterte said he would demand that Obama allow him to first explain the context of his crackdown before engaging the U.S. president in a discussion about the deaths.

Duterte has had a troublesome relation with the United States, questioning its inability to stop genocidal killings in the Middle East and Africa, and citing U.S. police shootings of black Americans that have set off protests.

He has also taken on a more conciliatory position with U.S. rival China. Philippines-China ties were strained under Duterte's predecessors due to territorial conflicts in the South China Sea. Duterte proclaimed early in his presidency that he would pursue a foreign policy not dependent on the United States.

Former Philippine Foreign Secretary Albert del Rosario, under whose watch U.S.-Philippine relations blossomed, expressed disappointment over the aborted meeting with the U.S.

"An invaluable occasion to have our leaders meet for the purpose of discussing how to strengthen our comprehensive areas of cooperation would have been a golden opportunity," del Rosario said.

Trump and Clinton turn to battleground states in the South

Clinton powered through a coughing fit at a Labor Day festival at a Cleveland park, sharply criticizing Trump's recent trip to Mexico as "an embarrassing international incident." Unwilling to allow Trump to modify his immigration stances, she said his address later that night in Arizona amounted to a "doubling down on his absurd plan to send a deportation force to round up 16 million people."

"He can try to fool voters into thinking somehow he's not as harsh and inhumane as he seems, but it's too late," Clinton said.

The former secretary of state flatly said "No," when asked in an ABC News interview whether she'd be willing to accept the Mexican president's invitation to visit the country, as Trump did last week.

"I'm going to continue to focus on what we're doing to create jobs here at home," Clinton said.

Earlier in the day, Trump attacked Clinton's energy level, noting she hasn't followed his aggressive traveling schedule and questioning whether she had the stamina to help bring jobs back to America.

"She doesn't have the energy to bring 'em back. You need energy, man," Trump told reporters.

He added, "She didn't have the energy to go to Louisiana. And she didn't have the energy to go to Mexico."

Clinton's 25-minute question-and-answer session was her first extensive availability with reporters since early December. Beyond Russia, she answered questions about the ongoing controversy surrounding her use of a private email server while secretary of state, which Trump has used to cast doubt over her ability to protect classified information.

"I take classification seriously," she said.

While Labor Day has traditionally been the kickoff to the fall campaign, both Clinton and Trump have been locked in an intense back-and-forth throughout the summer.

The start of full-fledged campaigning opens a pivotal month, culminating in the first presidential debate Sept. 26 at Hofstra University in Hempstead, New York. Polls show Trump trailing Clinton in a series of must-win battleground states, meaning the debates could be his best chance at reorienting the race.

Trump told reporters he does plan to take part in all three presidential debates, joking that only a "hurricane" or "natural disaster" would prevent him from attending.

The Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, Dr. Ibe Kachikwu and the Group Managing Director (GMD) of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), Maikanti Baru, on Monday denied plans to increase the pump price of petrol.

The GMD, however, directed the correspondents to go to the Petroleum Product Pricing and Regulatory Agency (PPPRA‎) for further clarification on the issue.

Pressed on the issue by State House correspondents, he asked, “have you seen any memo to that effect?”

School Teachers to be paid N150,000 in Enugu

Controversies and allegations of fraud are currently rocking the on-going teachers’ recruitment exercise in Enugu State.

The allegations, ranging from poor conduct of the exercise to demand for a bribe, are causing ripples in the State‎.

The Enugu State Government had recently commenced plans to recruit 2000 teachers for the primary schools across the State.

The recruitment exercise, which held simultaneously at the 17 local government areas of Enugu State, as well as the College of Immaculate Conception, CIC, Enugu, witnessed a turn-out of thousands of applicants.
Whereas those whose names were shortlisted had their examination at the designated council areas, the CIC played host to thousands of applicants who had their names missing in the list.

However, signs that all was not well with the exercise started showing early in the morning as the applicants at the CIC waited from 7 am till 4 pm before the process for the test commenced.

According to one of the applicants, “the failure started from step one. You can imagine a situation where the names of the shortlisted candidates were pasted just on the eve preceding the examination.‎ So, all the applicants staying out of Enugu were automatically shut out of the system.

“Secondly, on the day of the examination, there was no sign of preparation for the exercise at all. We reported at the CIC by 7 am but at the end of the day, we managed to start the test by 5:30 p.m.

“We had no seat, no where to place out paper; I just placed the answer script on my laps, even as there were thousands of us in a hall that shouldn’t take more than 200 persons.”

Another applicant alleged that some persons, who were acting as cronies for the board members of the Enugu State Universal Basic Education Board, ENSUBEB, were allegedly demanding for a bribe, ranging from N130,000 to N150,000 in order to get the job.

“They are asking us to pay N150,000 (one hundred and fifty thousand naira) for the teaching job. We now understand why from the onset the process was not made in such a way that the best would emerge.

“If they had organized the test very well, if the process had been credible, it would have been easy to pick the best out of the several applicants.

“But as it stands, they are just interested in the money they would make out of the system. You know how much they would get by collecting such money from thousands of applicants”, one of them further alleged.
Another applicant lamented that “one is not even so sure that he will get the job after coughing out such sum of money at this critical time.

“The Enugu State Governor, Hon. Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi should call the ENSUBEB to order. They should organize a credible test for us. We are ready to face credible process, not a make-belief exercise.”
However, the Chairman of the ENSUBEB, Mr. Ikeje Asogwa, vehemently denied the allegations.

He told DAILY POST that “There is nothing like that; nobody is collecting money. We have said it again and again that people should not fall victim.

“We have also been announcing it on radio for about two weeks now that nobody should give money to anybody.”

He had earlier in ‎a media report declared that the board would make use of the employment window to ensure that only best brains were employed so as to correct the long time anomaly in the primary school system.

He maintained that the board would not cut corners in the ongoing recruitment exercise, adding that the society and the state would be the greatest beneficiaries when best brains were employed to teach their pupils and children.

“It is high time we join hands to reposition the primary school system in the state and this has to start with the recruitment of sound teachers to teach in our primary schools.
“We cannot recruit poor brains in our schools and expect the best from our pupils and school children.

“Somebody who wants to teach should be sound enough to do that. If we support the best, it will pay off in the quality of our primary school children”, he explained.

Mali defence minister Tieman Hubert Coulibaly fired after jihadists temporarily seize town

Mali's minister of defence Tieman Hubert Coulibaly was fired Saturday, officials told AFP, a day after jihadists briefly took control of a town in the country's centre.

A decree released by the government stated his post had been revoked after militants stepped up attacks in the country's centre in recent months, targeting government and military installations.

A senior official in the Malian defence ministry told AFP it came following "the latest waves of insecurity in central Mali," referring to jihadists' seizure of the town of Boni on Friday and an attack on a central Mali military base in Nampala that killed several soldiers in July.

The Malian army on Saturday regained control of Boni, which is home to several thousand people, from the jihadists who had escaped with a local official as a hostage.

The militants fired on administrative buildings and set fire to the mayor's office, leading the army to recall its troops from the vicinity.

"The jihadists left Boni in the night and today around 8am (0800 GMT) the Malian army came back to take control of the town," a Malian security source told AFP.

A source close to the UN mission in the country, which is known by the acronym MINUSMA, said two helicopters were providing cover over the town, "to support the Malian army, who are now in control."

However, an administrative source in the town said the jihadists "kidnapped a Boni community official" whom they accused of giving information to the security forces.

Ongoing international military intervention since January 2013 has driven Islamist fighters away from major urban centres which they had briefly controlled, but large tracts of Mali are still not controlled by domestic or foreign troops.

Jihadist groups early last year began to carry out attacks in central Mali as well as the long-troubled north.

Ansar Dine claimed responsibility for the July 19 attack on Nampala, in which 17 soldiers were killed, 37 were wounded and six were reported missing, according to the official toll.

Abdoulaye Idrissa Maiga, formerly land minister, was named to replace Coulibaly, according to the government statement.

Pope declares Mother Teresa a saint and model of mercy

Pope Francis declared Mother Teresa a saint on Sunday, honoring the tiny nun who cared for the world's most destitute and holding her up as a model for a Catholic Church that goes to the peripheries to find poor, wounded souls.

Applause erupted in St. Peter's Square even before Francis finished pronouncing the rite of canonization at the start of Mass, evidence of the admiration Mother Teresa enjoyed from Christians and non-Christians alike.

For Francis, Mother Teresa put into action his ideal of the church as a merciful "field hospital" for the poorest of the poor, those suffering both material and spiritual poverty. By canonizing her during his Jubilee Year of Mercy, he in some ways is making her the icon of his entire pontificate.

Hundreds of Missionaries of Charity sisters in their trademark blue-trimmed saris had front-row seats at the Mass, sitting under a searing hot sun and blue skies alongside 1,500 homeless people and 13 heads of state or government, including Queen Sofia of Spain.

"Her heart, she gave it to the world," said Charlotte Samba, a 52-year-old mother of three who travelled with a church group from Gabon for the Mass. "Mercy, forgiveness, good works: It is the heart of a mother for the poor."

While big, the crowds were not as large as the 300,000 who turned out for Mother Teresa's 2003 beatification, thanks in part to security fears in the wake of Islamic extremist attacks in Europe. Those fears prompted a huge, 3,000-strong law enforcement presence to secure the area around the Vatican and close the airspace above.

Nevertheless, those on hand were jubilant to have made the journey — nuns, priests, volunteers, pilgrims and tourists clutching the coveted 100,000 tickets issued for the Mass.

One group of 40 Indian nationals traveled from Macerata, Italy to honor a woman given India's highest civilian and humanitarian awards for her work in the slums of Kolkata. Another group of 100 drove from Kosovo toting a banner that read: "Mother Teresa: Pray for Us."

While Francis is clearly keen to hold Mother Teresa up as a model for her joyful dedication to society's outcasts, he is also recognizing holiness in a nun who lived most of her adult life in spiritual agony sensing that God had abandoned her.

According to correspondence that came to light after she died in 1997, Mother Teresa experienced what the church calls a "dark night of the soul" — a period of spiritual doubt, despair and loneliness that many of the great mystics experienced. In Mother Teresa's case, it lasted for nearly 50 years — an almost unheard of trial.

For the Rev. Brian Kolodiejchuk, the Canadian priest who spearheaded Mother Teresa's saint-making campaign, the revelations were further confirmation of Mother Teresa's heroic saintliness. He said that by canonizing her, Francis is recognizing that Mother Teresa not only shared the material poverty of the poor but the spiritual poverty of those who feel "unloved, unwanted, uncared for."

"What she described as the greatest poverty in the world today (of feeling unloved) she herself was living in relationship with Jesus," he said in an interview on the eve of the canonization.

Francis has in many ways modeled his papacy on Mother Teresa's simple lifestyle and selfless service to the poor: He eschewed the Apostolic Palace for a hotel room, he has made welcoming migrants and the poor a hallmark and has fiercely denounced today's "throwaway" culture that discards the unborn, the sick and the elderly with ease.

In keeping with her spirit, he was treating 1,500 homeless people bussed into Rome for the Mass to a pizza lunch in the Vatican auditorium afterward.

Sunday's festivities honoring Mother Teresa weren't limited to Rome: In Kolkata, where she spent a lifetime dedicated to the poor, a special Sunday Mass was held at the order's Mother House. Volunteers and admirers converged on Mother House to watch the canonization ceremony, which was being broadcast on giant TV screens in Kolkata and elsewhere.

Sisters of Charity volunteers planned to distribute food to the poor nearby after the ceremony, and community meals were being served across Catholic parishes in India on Sunday — a symbolic reference to Mother Teresa's lifetime of service to humanity, said the Rev. Savarimuthu Sankar of the archdiocese of New Delhi.

"Let the example of Mother Teresa inspire all of us to dedicate ourselves to the welfare of mankind," said Indian President Pranab Mukherjee.

Ceremonies were also expected in Skopje, Macedonia, where Mother Teresa was born, and also in Albania and Kosovo, where people of her same ethnic Albanian background live.

Born Agnes Gonxhe Bojaxhiu on Aug. 26, 1910, Mother Teresa came to India in 1929 as a sister of the Loreto order. In 1946, she received what she described as a "call within a call" to found a new order dedicated to caring for the most unloved and unwanted, the "poorest of the poor."

In 1950 she founded the Missionaries of Charity, which went onto become a global order of nuns — identified by their trademark blue-trimmed saris — as well as priests, brothers and lay co-workers.

She was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1979.

She died in 1997 after a lifetime spent caring for hundreds of thousands of destitute and homeless poor in Kolkata, for which she came to be called the "saint of the gutters."

St. John Paul II, her most ardent supporter, fast-tracked her for sainthood and beatified her before a crowd of 300,000 in 2003.

Iheanacho goal helps Nigeria to slim win over Tanzania - AFCON 2017 Qualifiers

Kelechi Iheanacho saved the day for Nigeria, scoring the only goal as the Super Eagles laboured to a slim 1-0 win over Tanzania in their final game of the AFCON 2017 Qualifiers.

Despite the huge crowd cheering them on at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium in Uyo on Saturday, the Eagles had to wait till the 78th minute before they could register the first and only goal of the game.

Tanzania keeper Manula gave a man-of-the-match display, stopping the Eagles on a number of occasions. But the shot-stopper had no answer to Iheanacho’s thunderbolt in the 78th minute.

Saturday’s win was the only one recorded by Nigeria in the AFCON 2017 Qualifiers as they finish with five points in four games.

Egypt, on their part, topped the group with unassailable 10 points from same number of games like the Super Eagles.

Thousands Crowd Vatican for Chance to See Mother Teresa Made a Saint

Mother Teresa has long been considered a saint by many people around the world. On Sunday morning, Pope Francis will officially bestow that title at her canonization ceremony in St. Peter’s Square.

The canonization marks a highlight of the Jubilee year that Francis had proclaimed to celebrate the theme of mercy. On Saturday, he told thousands of cheering volunteers gathered in St. Peter’s Square that Mother Teresa was a “witness to mercy in our time.”

Of her canonization, he said, “She deserves it.”

A portrait of Mother Teresa, the Roman Catholic nun described by Pope John Paul II as an “icon of the good Samaritan,” is displayed on the facade of St. Peter’s Basilica and shows the saint-to-be in her distinctive blue-trimmed white sari. The portrait was commissioned by the Knights of Columbus and painted by Chas Fagan, an American artist.

Mother Teresa earned fame and accolades over a lifetime spent working with the poor and the sick, and with orphans, lepers and AIDS patients, first in the slums of Kolkata, India, and then in many other countries.

She made the cover of Time magazine in December 1975 for an article that acknowledged her as one of the world’s “living saints.” When told that she had won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1979, she said, “I am unworthy.”

Mother Teresa’s supporters praise her selflessness and humility, noting that though she associated with royalty, government leaders and popes, she continued to live simply until her death in 1997.

“She was one with us,” said Sister Mary Prema Pierick, the superior general of the Missionaries of Charity, the religious order founded by Mother Teresa in 1950, at Vatican news conference on Friday. “She never wanted or accepted anything not common with all the sisters.”

The order that Mother Teresa started with 12 nuns now numbers more than 5,800 people in 139 countries, including two orders of brothers and one of priests. The congregation continues her work of ministering to the world’s least privileged, those she called “the poorest of the poor.”

Mother Teresa was “both mother and teacher,” Sister Prema said. “She lived the religious life with so much joy and enthusiasm that we all wanted to be close with her.”

Her gift, she added, was “to make everybody aware of their own responsibility,” and inspire people with the knowledge that “each one of us can make a difference.”

Mother Teresa will be canonized 19 years after her death, remarkably fast for modern times.

Pope John Paul II, who is now also a saint, went against protocol when he allowed the canonization process to begin two years after her death, not the customary five. He beatified her in 2003 after a miracle, the healing of a tumor-stricken woman, was attributed to her intercession.

A second miracle, recognized by the pope last year, opened the way to sanctity.

“I am very grateful for this miracle,” said Marcilio Haddad Andrino, a Brazilian who recovered from a life-threatening brain infection in 2008 after his family prayed to Mother Teresa. Mr. Andrino came to Rome for the ceremony and was present at the Vatican news conference.

“The merciful Lord looks at us all without any distinction,” Mr. Andrino said. “Maybe it was me this time but maybe tomorrow it will be someone else.”

Mother Teresa, for all her acclaim, was not without critics. Some have questioned the hygiene and medical standards adopted by the sisters in some of the shelters and clinics run by the Missionaries of Charity. Others, like Dr. Aroup Chatterjee, have criticized what they call a “cult of suffering” that was prevalent in some of the homes run by the order.

In a book, and also the documentary “Hell’s Angel,” the author and essayist Christopher Hitchens accused Mother Teresa of being an “ally of the status quo,” also calling her a “zealot” and a “fanatic.” Mr. Hitchens charged that instead of empowering the poor to seek a better future, she instilled the idea that their condition was permanent.

Her campaigns against birth control and abortion, which she once called “the greatest destroyer of peace today,” angered feminists and raised concerns with aid organizations.

Some doctors and officials in India have also challenged the narrative of Monica Besra, the woman said to have benefited from Mother Teresa’s first miraculous intervention, saying that Ms. Besra had been suffering from a cyst, not a tumor.

Mother Teresa was born Agnes Gonxhe Bojaxhiu in 1910 to Albanian parents in Skopje, then part of the Ottoman Empire and now the capital of Macedonia. Today, she is regarded as the city’s most important native, and celebrations for her canonization will be held there for a week.

“Skopje and the citizens of Skopje will use this opportunity to thank the saint Mother Teresa and to continue on the path that she unselfishly showed us — the path towards understanding, compassion and love,” said Koce Trajanovski, the mayor of Skopje, where streets and clinics are named for her. A memorial in her honor has attracted more than 700,000 visitors over the last five years.

The canonization will be broadcast live on the Vatican’s television station and streamed online through a Vatican website. It will be presented on Vatican Radio in seven languages, including Albanian.

Tens of thousands of people are expected to gather at St. Peter’s Square on Sunday, along with 15 official government delegations, including representatives of India and the United States. The chief Vatican spokesman, Greg Burke, said all 100,000 tickets that the Holy See had made available have been distributed.

Mr. Burke recalled a visit to the Vatican press room that Mother Teresa made “many years ago.” “She’s not the only saint to have passed through here,” he said, “but there haven’t been many, I think,” he said.

She is the perfect saint for the year of mercy, the Rev. Brian Kolodiejchuk, the superior general of the Missionary Fathers of Charity, one of the religious institutes founded by Mother Teresa, said on Friday.

Mother Teresa was “so aware of her need for mercy before God. She was very much at home with her own poverty,” added Father Kolodiejchuk, the chief promoter of her case for sainthood.

“This Year of Mercy is first of all a reminder to all of us that before God we all stand in need of mercy; so in this we are all poor.”

Donald Trump swayed to songs of worship, read scripture, and donned a Jewish prayer shawl Saturday during a visit to a predominantly black church in Detroit, where he called for a "civil rights agenda of our time" and vowed to fix the "many wrongs" facing African-Americans.

"I am here to listen to you," Trump told the congregation at the Great Faith Ministries International. "I'm here today to learn."

Trump has stepped up his outreach to minority voters in recent weeks as he tries to expand his appeal beyond his GOP base. The visit was Trump's first to a black church — a rare appearance in front of a largely-minority audience for the candidate who typically attracts overwhelmingly white crowds.

Trump was introduced by Bishop Wayne T. Jackson, who warned that he was in for something different. "This is the first African-American church he's been in, y'all! Now it's a little different from a Presbyterian church," he said.

While protesters were a vocal presence outside, Trump made a pitch inside for support from an electorate strongly aligned with Democrat Hillary Clinton.

"Our nation is too divided," said Trump, who is known for making contentious remarks. "We talk past each other, not to each other. And those who seek office do not do enough to step into the community and learn what is going on."

Striking a rare unifying tone, he said, "I'm here today to learn so that we can together remedy injustice in any form."

Trump also praised the black church as "the conscience of our country" and said the nation needs "a civil rights agenda of our time" that includes the right to a quality education, safe neighborhoods and good jobs.

"I fully understand that the African-American community has suffered from discrimination and that there are many wrongs that must still be made right," Trump said.

Before he left, he was presented with a prayer shawl, which Jackson draped over Trump's shoulders, and a Jewish Heritage Studies bible. Trump also met with a smaller group of church members and recorded an interview with the pastor.

Trump's efforts thus far to attract greater support from minority groups have largely fallen flat. Polls show Clinton with overwhelmingly more support from blacks and Hispanics. African-American community leaders, in particular, have railed against Trump's dire depictions of minority life and dismissed his message as intended more to reassure white voters that he's not racist than to help communities of color.

Outside the church, several separate protests swelled into a throng of about 400 people denouncing Trump. At one point, the protesters tried to push through a barrier to the parking lot but were stopped by church security and police.

Rev. Lawrence Glass, one of the clergy denouncing Trump's visit, said Trump represents the "politics of fear and hate," and "minorities of all kinds have much to lose taking a chance on someone like" Trump.

Emery Northington, 42, who works in auto sales, said that Trump "doesn't have my best interest in hand."

Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan also issued a statement saying that, "Mr. Trump ran a campaign through the nomination process of bigotry."

But inside, churchgoers who chose to attend Trump's speech speak said they thought it was important to hear directly from the Republican nominee as they weigh their options.

"I'm here to hear what he has to say," said Milton Lewis, 46, who works as a minister at another church.

"I have a very open mind," echoed Pierre Curtis, 69, a Great Faith Ministries International congregation member for more than 20 years.

After the church visit, Trump made a brief stop at the southwest Detroit childhood home of Ben Carson, the retired neurosurgeon who ran against Trump in the primaries and is now advising the campaign.

Surrounded by security and a swarm of reporters, Trump spoke briefly with the home's current owner, Felicia Reese.

"Your house is worth a lot of money," he told her, thanks to the Carson connection.

Carson told The Associated Press before the trip that it would serve as an opportunity for Trump to see the challenges residents face as he refines his policy plans.

"It always makes much more of an impression, I think, when you see things firsthand," Carson said.

Detroit is about 80 percent black, and many are struggling. Nearly 40 percent of residents are impoverished, compared with about 15 percent of Americans overall. Detroit's median household income is just over $26,000 — not even half the median for the nation, according to the census.

Meanwhile Trump's running mate, Indiana Gov. Mike Pence's, went virtually unnoticed during a stop at Ohio State University on the opening day of football season.

In an interview with NBC's "Meet The Press" Saturday, Pence said he plans to release his tax returns next week, and said Trump's long-awaited tax returns are also coming. He echoed Trump's promise that he will release his taxes upon the completion of an ongoing audit.
