Pena Nieto says Mexicans hurt by Trump comments

Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto says the Mexican people have been hurt by Donald Trump's past comments that painted them in a negative light.

Peña Nieto told reporters following a closed-door meeting that "misinterpretation or assertions" had negatively impacted perceptions of Trump's candidacy.

He added that, the "Mexican people have been hurt by the comments that had been made." But he said he's sure that Trump is genuinely interested in building a relationship that will benefit both countries.

Peña Nieto spoke in Spanish throughout.

After meeting with Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto, Republican nominee Donald Trump says that both countries must respect the others' right to build a border wall on their soil to stop the movement of people, illegal drugs and weapons.

Trump says he and PeñaNieto discussed his call for a border wall during their meeting, but did not talk about Trump's insistence that Mexico pay for it. He says, "that'll be for a later date."

Trump says that having a secure border is a sovereign right and mutually beneficial. Mexicans have been outraged by the proposal.

Republican Donald Trump is calling his surprise visit to Mexico City Wednesday a 'great honor.' And he says the nations share a common interest in keeping the hemisphere safe and prosperous.

The Republican presidential nominee said after meeting with President Enrique Peña Nieto that the pair had a substantive, direct and constructive exchange of ideas at the president's official residence in Mexico City.

This is Trump's first foreign visit as his party's nominee.

Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto is challenging Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump's characterization of the situation on the U.S.-Mexican border.

Peña Nieto notes that the number of immigrants crossing the border illegally is down significantly "even to the point of being negative to a net effect." He spoke at a joint appearance Wednesday at the president's official residence.

While Peña Nieto says the countries have shared challenges, he says that there exists "an incomplete vision of the border issues," with weapons and cash flowing south from the U.S. and fueling violence.

He's also stressing U.S. exports to Mexico and the number of jobs reliant on the countries' trade relationship.

He says the Mexican people are people of "good will" who "deserve everybody's respect."

Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto says that he and Donald Trump may not agree on everything, but that their meeting underscores their countries' shared interests.

Peña Nieto tells reporters that their meeting with the Republican nominee at the president's official residence in Mexico City was "open and constructive."

He says in Spanish that the next president "will find in Mexico and its government" a neighbor who "wants to work constructively to strengthen even more" the relationship between their nations.

Chelsea have re-sign David Lius from PSG

During his final season at the club before departing, the Brazilian produced more fine displays, including in midfield in the away win at Manchester City and the 6-0 demolition of Arsenal, as well as the Champions League victory over PSG as we turned a 3-1 first-leg deficit on its head to progress.

David Luiz, who has been capped over 50 times for Brazil and played at the 2014 World Cup, scored his first goal for PSG in a Champions League win over Barcelona and ended his maiden campaign in France having helped them complete the Treble. On a personal level he was rewarded for his impressive form by being included in the FIFA Team of the Year.

Similar success followed last season as PSG won all three domestic trophies once again, with David Luiz an important member of the side.

He was named in the Ligue 1 Team of the Year at the end of both of his seasons in Paris and now returns to Chelsea, where he could feature against Swansea in our next fixture a week on Sunday.

PDP demands Buhari’s resignation - Economic Crisis

The Peoples Democratic Party on Wednesday railed against President Muhammadu Buhari, accusing his administration of incompetence, and saying he should step down after the nation slipped into economic recession.

“We join all well meaning Nigerians to call on Mr. Buhari to resign if he is unable to reverse the disastrous economic decline he has brought on Nigerians,” the party said hours after figures released by the National Bureau of Statistics confirmed that Nigeria had slipped into recession.

The NBS said Nigeria’s Gross Domestic Product contracted by 2.06 per cent, marking the first major recession in 29 years for Africa’s largest economy.

Analysts have long predicted that Nigeria’s economy was heading for a recession amid a shrinking naira and diminishing revenues occasioned by low crude prices.

The downward spiral has led to an increase in the number of Nigerians struggling to eke out a living, fueling fears of an outbreak of social unrest.

Behavioural economic experts and religious leaders recently raised concerns about the dangers of leaving the country’s expanding youth population without means of livelihood for too long.

The PDP in its statement Wednesday saw the crisis as a direct consequence of Mr. Buhari’s “ineptitude and incompetent” approach to economic management which were a rehash of the “archaic and incoherent economic policies” he similarly pursued as the head of a military junta between 1983 and 1985.

“Nothing better showcases the absolute ineptitude and incompetence of the Muhammadu Buhari administration than the GDP, Inflation and unemployment figures released by the Nigerian Bureau of Statistics today,” the PDP said in a statement signed by Deji Adeyanju, its director of new media.

“The result of these indices is that Nigeria is in its worst economic state for 29 years —dating back to 1987 when the nation had to take harsh steps to recover from President Buhari’s policies of 1984-85.”

“As with 1984-85, companies are fleeing our shores in droves. Manufacturers Association of Nigeria (MAN) recently stated that 272 companies have shut down in the past one year,” Mr. Adeyanju said.

Mr. Adeyanju also quoted key aspects of the detailed data as released by the NBS on Wednesday and compared them with what they were before his party was voted out in 2015 after a 16-year streak.

“Portfolio investment declined to an estimated $245.3m in Q2 2016. This represents a 9.5% from $271.0m in Q1 2016 & is a far cry from $2.81bn in Q2 2015,” Mr. Adeyanju said. “A total of 4,580,602 people have lost their jobs since May 29, 2015.”

The Buhari administration, in a statement Wednesday afternoon, acknowledged the gloomy economic data, but assured of improvements in an apparent bid to assuage the fears of Nigerians.

“The just released GDP figures for the 2016 second quarter by the National Bureau of Statistics while confirming a temporary decline, has (sic) also indicated an (sic) hopeful expectation in the country’s economic trajectory,” the State House said in a statement signed by Laolu Akande.

The administration attributed the negative results to the activities of oil vandals and said other aspects of the economy were yielding intended results, indicating that Mr. Buhari might not be ready to accept growing calls for a new policy direction.

“A close look at the data shows that this outcome was mostly due to a sharp contraction in the oil sector due to huge losses of crude oil production as a result of vandalisation and sabotage.

“However, the rest of the Q2 data is beginning to tell a different story. There was growth in the agricultural and solid minerals sectors which are the areas in which the Federal Government has placed particular priority,” Mr. Akande said.

But the PDP, in its statement, said it was unimpressed by the administration’s explanations, saying it had observed a worrisome trend in the polity.

“Our dismay is worsened by the fact that every sphere of the Nigerian socio-political space (ranging from the conduct of elections, human rights, respect for the rule of law, security, technology, health etc) is negatively affected by the Buhari administration,” Mr. Adeyanju said.

Trump in Mexico: US has right to build border wall

Republican White House hopeful Donald Trump on Wednesday stood alongside Mexico's President Enrique Pena Nieto and declared that the United States has the right to erect a border wall to stem illegal immigration.

"We recognize and respect the right of either country to build a physical barrier or wall on any of its borders," Trump said at the presidential residence in Mexico City after the two men held closed-door talks.

He acknowledged, however, that they did not discuss who will pay for the wall, despite Trump persistently stating throughout his campaign that Mexico will foot the bill for the highly controversial project.

"We didn't discuss that. We didn't discuss who pays for the wall," Trump said.

After a year of lobbing insults at Mexico, the provocative billionaire candidate was making a surprise visit to the neighboring country in the heat of the US presidential campaign, seeking to seize control of the narrative and portray himself as a capable statesman on the international stage.

It was a day of high drama for both men, who found themselves face to face after having exchanged criticisms from afar over the past year.

After Trump launched his presidential campaign last year by declaring that Mexico was sending "rapists" and other criminals across the border, Pena Nieto likened the New York businessman's isolationist positions to Nazi leader Adolf Hitler and fascist Benito Mussolini.

On Wednesday Pena Nieto was far more diplomatic, saying it was crucial to transform the countries' shared border from a controversy into "an asset for our region."

But he did not hide the fact that many in his country have felt the sting of Trump's harsh rhetoric.

"Mexican people felt hurt by the comments made," Pena Nieto said, with Trump at his side. "But I'm sure that the genuine interest is to build a relationship that will give both of our societies better welfare."

Trump said the two allied nations could improve ties by addressing five points: ending illegal immigration, securing the border, dismantling drug cartels, improving NAFTA -- the 22-year-old North American Free Trade Agreement that Trump argues has been a disaster for the United States -- and maintaining "manufacturing wealth" in the region.

Trump was to immediately fly to Phoenix, Arizona where he will give a highly anticipated speech on his immigration policies.

Islam Slimani spearheaded Algeria's run to the last 16 of the World Cup. Islam Slimani has joined the Premier League champions.

Premier League champions Leicester City have signed Algeria striker Islam Slimani from Sporting for a club-record fee.

Sources close to the club have told ESPN FC that the fee for the 28-year-old is €35 million.

Slimani scored 48 goals in 82 league appearances for the Portuguese club in his two seasons at the Estadio Jose Alvalade and has been linked with a move to England for the past few years.

The move looked in doubt after Sporting rejected Leicester's opening offer, but the Foxes came back with an improved bid to land the striker on Tuesday night.

The Algeria international will link up with his international teammate Riyad Mahrez, who signed a new contract at the club earlier this month.

Leicester have already persuaded Jamie Vardy to commit his future to the club and spent £16.6m on Nigeria forward Ahmed Musa.

A bid of €30m has also been tabled by the Premier League champions for Sporting Lisbon midfielder Adrien Silva, but no deal has yet been completed.

Facebook CEO visit to Nigeria was a witness to Africa's tech revolution

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg is visiting Nigeria this week on his first trip to Africa, using his time in the country to visit the Yaba technology hub in Lagos, meet with developers and partners, and explore Nollywood.

Zuckerberg is in Nigeria to listen and learn and take ideas back to California on how Facebook can better support tech development and entrepreneurship across Africa.

One of his first stops on the trip was to visit a 'Summer of Code Camp' at the Co-Creation Hub (CcHub) in Yaba, known as the Silicon Valley of Nigeria.

CcHub opened in 2011 and at the time didn't even have an office. Five years later they fill three floors and the roof of a building. At CcHub people can learn how to code, developers can get help launching their first products, and find mentors and funding.

At CcHub Zuckerberg met with developers like Temi Giwa, who runs a platform called Life Bank that makes blood available when and where it is needed in Nigeria. Life Bank saves lives by mobilizing blood donations, taking inventory of all blood available in the country, and delivering blood in the right condition to where it is needed.

After visiting CcHub Mark Zuckerberg, CEO of Facebook, said:

“This is my first trip to sub-Saharan Africa. I'll be meeting with developers and entrepreneurs, and learning about the startup ecosystem in Nigeria. The energy here is amazing and I'm excited to learn as much as I can.

“The first place I got to visit was the Co-creation Hub Nigeria (CcHUB) in Yaba. I got to talk to kids at a summer coding camp and entrepreneurs who come to CcHub to build and launch their apps.  I'm looking forward to meeting more people in Nigeria.”

Meeting developers at Andela

Mark then went to Andela, an engineering organization that is building the next generation of technical leaders in Africa.

Andela is a business that recruits the most talented technologists in Africa and shapes them into world-class developers through a four-year technical leadership program. In the two years since it was founded, Andela has accepted just over 200 engineers from a pool of more than 40,000 applicants. Andela developers spend six months mastering a technical stack and contributing to open source projects before being placed with global technology companies as full-time, distributed teammates, working out of Andela headquarters in Lagos and Nairobi.

Earlier this year, the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative invested in Andela after being impressed by the company's innovative model of learning and its drive to connect the global technology ecosystem with the most talented developers in Africa.

Seni Sulyman, Director, Andela Lagos, said: “We are excited and honored to welcome Mark Zuckerberg to Lagos. His visit reinforces not only his support of Andela’s mission, but his belief that indeed the next generation of great technology leaders will come out of Lagos, Nigeria and cities across Africa. Andela has created a platform for passionate, driven software developers and engineers to break into the global tech ecosystem, but the barriers to entry are still very high. Mark’s visit demonstrates to all Nigerian developers and entrepreneurs that they’ve caught the attention of the tech world, and they are capable of succeeding on a truly global level."

At the end of the day Zuckerberg stopped by an Express WiFi stand in Lagos owned by Rosemary Njoku. Facebook's Express WiFi lets entrepreneurs like Rosemary set up a hot spot to help their community access apps and services built by local developers.

Alvaro Arbeloa joins West Ham United on a one-year contract

West Ham United are delighted to announce the signing of FIFA World Cup and two-time UEFA European Championship winner Alvaro Arbeloa.

The highly-decorated Spanish full-back, who has also won the UEFA Champions League, joins the Hammers on a one-year contract and will add huge experience and ability to Slaven Bilic’s squad.

The former Liverpool defender, who underwent a medical at Spire Roding Hospital on Wednesday, told West Ham TV he is looking forward to returning to the Premier League and pulling on the Claret and Blue shirt for the first time.

"I am really happy to be here in a great Club in a great league," Arbeloa told West Ham TV. "I'm really happy to be back in England and, for me, it's a great chance and I'm looking forward to playing with this side.

"The Stadium is amazing. It's really nice and looks fantastic. Hopefully I'm going to see the Stadium full with all our fans and I'm really happy to be here.

"For me, this is a great chance to be back in England and in the Premier League, which is a fantastic league and I want to put myself here again. This is a big Club and a great Club with fantastic players and a great coach.

"Slaven wants to see me training as soon as possible. I was talking with [Croatia internationals] Luka Modric and Matteo Kovacic and they told me good things about the coach, so I want to work with him and hopefully I can learn a lot of things."

Born in Salamanca in January 1983, Arbeloa came through the youth ranks at Real Zaragoza before joining Real Madrid at the age of 18. There, he excelled for the club’s C and B teams before being handed a first-team debut against Real Betis in October 2004.

With massive competition for places at the Estadio Santiagio Bernabeu, where Spain international Michel Salgado and Brazil great Roberto Carlos filled the full-back positions, Arbeloa opted to continue his career with Deportivo La Coruna in summer 2006.

After six months in Galicia, the defender was signed by compatriot Rafael Benitez, who was in the midst of his successful reign as Liverpool manager.

Arbeloa appeared 98 times over two-and-a-half seasons with the Anfield club, including the 2007 UEFA Champions League final defeat by AC Milan.

July 2009 saw the versatile player heading back to former club Real Madrid, where he spent the next six seasons as a regular member of the starting XI, initially at left-back and latterly at right-back.

A maiden La Liga title arrived in 2012, sandwiched by Spanish Cup successes in 2011 and 2014 – the same year in which he also won the UEFA Champions League, FIFA Club World Cup and UEFA Super Cup.

Capped 56 times by Spain, Arbeloa was a member of the best squad in the country’s history. His finest moment in a red shirt came in 2012, when he started all six games at right-back as Spain defended the European Championship title, conceding just one goal in six matches.

Arbeloa also featured once at Euro 2008 and the 2010 World Cup finals respectively as La Roja carried all before them to win both titles.

The 33-year-old becomes the 12th signing of the summer, following Ghana captain Andre Ayew Algeria winger Sofiane Feghouli, Norway midfielder Havard Nordtveit, Italy striker Simone Zaza, French left-back Arthur Masuaku, Swiss midfielder Edmilison Fernandes, Turkey winger Gokhan Tore, Argentine striker Jonathan Calleri, promising centre forward Ashley Fletcher and youngsters Domingos Quina and Toni Martinez.

Arbeloa will link up with fellow countrymen Adrian, Pedro Obiang and Martinez at London Stadium and will become the seventh Spaniard to play for the Club, following Kepa Blanco, Diego Tristan and Manuel Almunia.

Donald Trump lands in Mexico ahead of meeting

Donald Trump's private jet landed in Mexico City Wednesday for a hastily arranged meeting with Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto, according to local media reports, marking Trump's first formal international trip as the Republican nominee to a country where he is broadly despised for his vilification of illegal immigrants.

Trump and Peña Nieto plan to meet this afternoon, ahead of a major immigration speech Trump intends to deliver in the evening in Phoenix. His campaign manager, Kellyanne Conway, said Trump intends to talk to Peña Nieto about "shared concerns" including trade, illegal immigration and drugs.

"It's very important to show that you're willing to work with a neighboring country before you're president," Conway said on Fox News Channel.

She said the two will take questions from the American and Mexican press and it will be "up to them" to decide whether they want to make a joint statement. But American reporters who cover Trump regularly expressed concerns on social media about Trump's decision not to bring his regular press corps with him.

El Universal, a major newspaper, reported the arrival, quoting airport sources, and said Trump would travel by helicopter from the airport's presidential hangar to the presidential palace in Mexico City.

Peña Nieto has sharply condemned Trump for repeatedly declaring that Mexico is sending predatory killers and rapists into America, but he is now the target of condemnation at home for extending an invitation to Trump last Friday. Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton also received an invitation but has not arranged a meeting yet.

Speaking at the American Legion convention in Cincinnati, Clinton went after Trump, saying coalition building and leadership will take more than a "photo-op."

"It certainly takes more than trying to make up for a year of insults and insinuations by dropping in on our neighbors for a few hours and then flying home again. That is not how it works," she said without naming her rival.

Zuckerberg: Learning key to technology growth

The Founder of Facebook, Mark Zuckerberg, has urged Information Technology (IT) entrepreneurs to focus on learning at all giving opportunities.

Zuckerberg said this during the live video streaming of his meeting with developers and entrepreneurs in Lagos on Wednesday.

He said that being focused on learning would help the entrepreneurs to know new things that would enable their businesses to succeed and grow.

According to him, learning is the process whereby one tries something and fails, but is able to make headway.

“You should not be afraid of failure, but you fall and learn from it. You make success when you make mistakes,’’ he said.

Zuckerberg said that constantly willing to learn had made Facebook to succeed as the platform and had given people the power to stay connected, wherever they were.

He said that to connect with people across the globe entailed having access to the internet.

According to him, building infrastructure is essential to have access to the internet and remain connected with the rest of the world.

“If we build infrastructure, anywhere we are in the world, we will have access to the internet and stay connected.

“To make people have access to the internet, it has to be affordable, so that everyone can get it and remain connected.

“For people to get connected, they have to understand why the internet is valuable to them. We need to spread the awareness of the need for the internet to make the world a better place,” he said.

Zuckerberg said that it was the wish of Facebook that by 10 to 15 years, everyone across the globe would be connected.

The Facebook CEO is currently in Lagos, Nigeria, to meet with applications developers and entrepreneurs and learn more about Nigeria’s Start-up ecosystem.

Brazil's Senate dismisses Rousseff for breaking budget laws after 61-20 votes

Brazil's Senate removed President Dilma Rousseff from office on Wednesday for breaking budgetary laws, ending an impeachment process that has polarized the scandal-plagued country and paralyzed its politics for nine months.

Senators voted 61-20 to convict Rousseff for illegally using money from state banks to boost public spending, putting an end to 13 years of leftist Workers Party rule in Latin America's largest economy.

Conservative Michel Temer, the former vice president who has run Brazil since Rousseff's suspension in May, will be sworn in on Wednesday to serve out the remainder of the presidential term through 2018.

A separate Senate vote will be held on whether Rousseff will be barred from public office for eight years.

Brazil's first female president has denied any wrongdoing and said the impeachment process was aimed at protecting the interests of the country's economic elite and rolling back social programs that lifted millions of Brazilians from poverty during the last decade.

Her opponents, however, have hailed the chance to turn the page on a drawn-out political crisis, the country's worst recession in generations and a sweeping corruption scandal at state oil company Petrobras.

Motorists honked car horns in the Brazilian capital in a blaring tribute to the removal of a president whose popularity had dwindled to single figures since winning re-election in 2014.

In Brazil's largest city, Sao Paulo, fireworks exploded in celebration after the vote.

Temer has vowed to boost an economy that has shrunk for six consecutive quarters and implement austerity measures to plug a record budget deficit, which cost Brazil its investment-grade credit rating last year.

However, he is likely to face bitter political opposition from the Workers Party, which has vowed to take to the streets in protest.

A statement by the Director, Bureau of Communication and Strategy in the Office of the Governor, Mr. Semiu Okanlawon stated that the President will during the visit, commission the newly built 3,000 students capacity Osogbo Government High School, Osogbo.

According to the statement, President Buhari’s visit to Osun will be a testimony to the landmark achievements in the almost six years of Governor Rauf Aregbesola as well as the good working relationship between Osun and the Federal Government.

The statement read in part, “From our own corner of this great country, we are poised to set examples on how to solve many of the national social economic and political complications confronting us. The magnificent Osogbo Government High School President Muhammadu Buhari will be commissioning on (Thursday) today is illustrative of the magnitude of our ideas and interventions in the education sector.

We remain unrelenting as we continue our assault on delayed infrastructure in our education sector and all other sectors.

“We urge the good people of the state to maintain the peace that the state is noted for during and after the President’s visit.

We ask them to give a rousing welcome to our amiable President.‎ ‎“We call on our people particularly the people of Osogbo and it’s environs, to come out in their great numbers and give our President a befitting welcome during his visit to our state.‎

“Mr. President’s visit is historic because it marks the first official Presidential visit to the state since we assumed office as the Governor of this great state”. The statement expressed. ‎Similarly, a chieftain of the All Progressive Congress, APC, in Osun state, Elder Peter Babalola urged the federal government to maximise opportunities the visit presents to collaborate with the state on some of the initiatives of the present administration.

In a statement in Osogbo, Babalola urged the president to bring in A-list of its technocrats to establish synergy with Osun in areas where resounding successes have been recorded. Noting that era of frosty relationship between Osun and the federal government had passed, Babalola, who is the chairman of Local Government Service Commission, listed areas he would expect collaboration with federal government to include youth empowerment, O’ Renewal and School Feeding.

Also, the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, in the state advised Governor Aregebesola to maximize the occasion of Preside Buhari’s visit to table before him series of woes facing the state and the citizens rather than presenting himself as a fulfilled and a performing governor.

According to the Party in a statement signed by its spokesman, Prince Diran Odeyemi, “the President if allowed to inspect Ido Osun Aerodrome, the International market in Dagbolu, Osogbo/ Kwara Boundary road and Osogbo/Gbongan road among other abandoned projects may wish to assist the state in resuscitating them for the benefit of the citizens”

“We heard it on good authority that the President will be commissioning Osogbo Grammar School but would expect governor Aregbesola to tell Nigerians the total cost of the building and the source of its finance” the party declared. The state chairman of APC, Prince Gboyega Famodun called on the citizens of the state to come out in their numbers to welcome President Muhammadu Buhari.

The chairman said that all Nigerians have a duty to support Mr. President in his effort to clean up the country of corruption that is primarily the cause of the economic collapse that has brought unbelievable hardship to the majority of people in this country.

Clinton speech to stress American leadership in world

Hillary Clinton plans to address America's leadership in the world during a speech in the battleground state of Ohio, arguing that Republican nominee Donald Trump would undermine the country's greatness while she would maintain it.

Clinton's midday address at the American Legion's annual convention in Cincinnati Wednesday comes as Trump plans a last-minute trip to Mexico hours before he delivers a long-expected speech on immigration. A Clinton campaign official said the Democratic nominee will use her first public event in days to portray her Republican opponent as a questionable leader who would "walk away from our allies, undermine our values, insult our military - and has explicitly rejected the idea of American exceptionalism."

In contrast, Clinton will "make the case" for American exceptionalism, an idea that the U.S., as an "exceptional" world citizen, has a moral obligation to advance democracy in the world rather than imposing it against another country's will. Clinton has long promoted pro-democracy projects in countries interested in changing their government and in her speech will "call for maintaining America's military and diplomatic leadership in the world," the official said.

Her views differ from Trump, who in his foreign policy speech, called for the U.S. to seize Iraq's oil, its major source of income and one of its few natural resources. "To the victor goes the spoils," he said.

Trump has pledged to "Make America Great Again" and restore the country to a time when, in his view, the U.S. was more prosperous and full of opportunity.

Clinton is pitching to Republicans who might support her that she will better support the military, foreign relationships and American values. She will talk about her experience on the Senate Armed Services Committee and as secretary of state.

A campaign official said that another Republican national security expert would back Clinton. James Clad, former deputy assistant secretary of defense under President George W. Bush, will announce his support for Clinton, following a slew of other GOP endorsements from the national security world. In a statement, Clad says that "giving an incoherent amateur the keys to the White House this November will doom us to second or third-class status."

Clinton's speech in Ohio comes after several days of big-ticket private fundraisers in the Hamptons, a wealthy community on New York's Long Island, where she collected millions at waterfront mansions in preparation for the fall campaign. The fundraising swing concluded in style Tuesday night, with an event featuring performances from Jimmy Buffett, Jon Bon Jovi and Paul McCartney.

Though many national and state polls show Clinton with an edge, she has been stressing that the campaign must not take anything for granted. At a fundraiser on Monday she told supporters she was "running against someone who will say or do anything. And who knows what that might be."

ABC Will Air the Oscars Through at Least 2028

This year's Oscars, hosted by Chris Rock, had the smallest 18-49 audience in at least 20 years.

ABC remains the only one of the big four broadcast networks shut out of the NFL broadcast business, but it has a lock on its yearly marquee live TV event for the next 12 years. The network and the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences have extended their agreement for ABC to broadcast the Academy Awards—which is usually the most-watched entertainment program of the year—through 2028.

This is an eight-year extension of the previous ABC/AMPAS deal, which was set to expire in 2020.

"We're honored to continue our storied and successful partnership with ABC in broadcasting the most watched live entertainment event of the year," said Academy president Cheryl Boone Isaacs in a statement. "In 2028, we'll mark the Oscars 100th anniversary, and ABC is the perfect partner to help us celebrate the magic of movies with our fans."

"After hosting the Academy Awards more than 50 times, ABC has become the home for Hollywood's most prestigious and glamorous night of television," said Ben Sherwood, co-chairman of Disney media networks and president of Disney-ABC Television Group, in a statement. "Broadcast television brings together the biggest audiences with high-quality live events, and ABC has the brightest, boldest lineup in the business."

The deal was important for ABC, which doesn't enjoy the ratings bumps that CBS, NBC and Fox receive from broadcasting NFL games each fall or from airing what is always the year's most-watched TV program, the Super Bowl, every three years. Those games help keep those networks on top of the ratings each season, leaving ABC to instead tout its status as No. 1 network for entertainment programming (i.e., non-sports programming, though NBC said it now ties ABC in that category).

But the Oscars isn't quite the ratings juggernaut it used to be. This year's ceremony, hosted by Chris Rock, drew its smallest 18-49 audience in at least 20 years, with 34.4 million total viewers. That made it the third lowest-rated Academy Awards telecast since 1974, which is as far back as Nielsen has telecast data for.

But even with the 8 percent drop in total viewers from last year's Academy Awards and 6 percent drop in the critical demo, the Oscars will likely end the year as the most-watched entertainment program, and ABC's top telecast of 2016.

ABC has exclusive domestic rights to the Oscars; the ceremony is also televised live in more than 225 countries and territories. The 89th Academy Awards will air Feb. 26.

In June, CBS extended its agreement to broadcast the Grammy Awards through 2026, which will keep it on the network for 54 consecutive years. ABC has broadcast the Oscars every year since 1976; this new agreement will keep the ceremony on ABC for 52 consecutive years.

ASUU Threatens Nationwide Strike Over Non-Implementation Of FG/ASUU Agreement

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has said it will  embark on a nationwide strike if the 2009 agreement it signed with the Federal Government is not implemented.

The ASUU Lagos Zone Coordinator, Prof. Olusoji Sowande, said this at a news conference on Tuesday, August 30, in Lagos.

Sowande said that the union decided on the industrial action to ensure that the government addresses the pending demands.

He said that the 2009 FG/ASUU agreement, Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) on funding of state universities, breaches of the conditions of service and re-negotiation of the agreement, are still pending. ‎

The coordinator also mentioned other demands like the exclusion of Nigerian universities from Pension Management Company and non-release of NEEDS Assessment Intervention Fund.

He said that funding of state universities earned academic allowance and renegotiation of the agreement ware part of the outstanding issues.

Sowande recalled that the union had embarked on strike in 2012 and 2013 as part of the efforts to make the government implement the agreement, adding that the issues remained unresolved.

He said: "The review of the agreement should have been undertaken in 2012 and 2015 but that did not happen.‎

"The implication is that our union has shown enough patriotism and understanding on these matters in the last four years.

"We are perplexed and disappointed that both the Federal and State Governments are not responding to our consistent appeals to bring about genuine transformation in the education sector."

Hart said in a statement on Torino's English-language website that the club's offer "came at the right moment".

Incumbent Bongo wins Gabon presidential poll, says election commission

Gabon’s President Ali Bongo has been re-elected with 49 percent of the vote, the country’s election commission told Reporters on Wednesday, defeating his main challenger Jean Ping, who got 48 percent in the final vote count.

Members of Gabon’s election commission (Cenap) on Wednesday confirmed reports that the official body had approved Bongo’s victory.

The official announcement is set to be made by the interior minister in a nationwide television address later Wednesday.

Bongo, 57, was running for a second term as head of the tiny oil-rich state previously ruled for 41 years by his father, Omar.

Ping, a 73-year-old career diplomat well-known on the international scene, worked with Bongo senior for many years.

Cenap members voted by secret ballot to approve a vote count from the Saturday poll that was disputed by delegates from the Ping camp.

"The opposition abstained," a delegate from Ping’s camp told the AFP.

At issue was the result in one of the country's nine provinces -- the Haut-Ogooue, the heartland of Bongo's Teke ethnic group.

A report claimed Bongo had won 95.5 percent of votes in the province, with turnout at 99.9 percent.

That gave Bongo a total 49.9 percent of votes nationwide, narrowly defeating Ping's 48.2 percent -- or a win with a tiny margin of just 5,594 votes.

Tensions have been rising in the West African nation amid fears of a repeat of the violence that followed Gabon’s disputed 2009 election.

Soldiers and police were deployed in the capital of Libreville Monday after Ping declared himself the winner in a Twitter post and called on Bongo to “abide by the verdict of the polls and to recognise his defeat".
